Is crypto dead yet? Project shutdowns peaked this April but the latest 2026 data hides a scarier trend
A tracker found at least 109 crypto project shutdowns, wind-downs, or inactive products in 2026 through Aug. 5, with DeFi hit hardest at 28. Other major losses were gaming (15), infrastructure (13), layer-1/layer-2 (12), other projects (11), NFTs (10), plus wallets, exchanges, and analytics. Closures peaked in April and then eased through July. The list includes high-profile exits like POAP, Zapper, BitMart, BitMEX, and Polygon zkEVM’s sunset, showing pressure across both decentralized and centralized crypto businesses. At the same time, institutional blockchain use is growing: Visa, JPMorgan, The Clearing House, and Swift are reporting or preparing real settlement and payment activity on controlled, compliant blockchain systems. The overall picture is not “crypto dead,” but a shift in which blockchain models are scaling.
