Italy investigates government email breach linked to Revolut data leak
Italian cybercrime police are investigating a government email compromise linked to a leak of Revolut customer data. Hackers allegedly used the breached account to send requests to Revolut and access sensitive customer information. Italy’s Polizia Postale is examining possible unauthorized access and computer fraud. Some reports named the compromised account as belonging to the Prefecture of Reggio Calabria, but that office later denied making requests to Revolut. Revolut said it reported the incident to Italian authorities when detected, is cooperating with the investigation, and that its systems, databases, and customer funds were not compromised. The compromised account was reportedly part of Italy’s PEC certified email system, which confirms delivery but does not ensure message security.
