Thailand SEC proposes retail access to regulated overseas crypto derivatives

Summary

Thailand’s SEC proposed rules that would let intermediaries offer retail investors access to some crypto derivatives traded overseas, if the products closely match Thai-listed crypto derivatives in underlying asset, maturity, leverage, and settlement. Eligible contracts must trade on an exchange with central clearing and be overseen by a regulator in specified international regulatory or exchange groups. Crypto derivatives that do not meet these conditions would be limited to institutional investors. The proposal is part of Thailand’s push to expand regulated crypto-linked products; cryptocurrencies and digital tokens were recently designated as allowable derivatives underlyings, and related contract specs are being discussed with the Thailand Futures Exchange. The consultation is open until Sept. 30.
