Vitalik Buterin Outlines 'Cryptographic World Computer' Plan for Ethereum
Ethereum’s next upgrade is framed as the last “normal” fork, after which the network shifts into a much more cryptographic design. The roadmap replaces core blockchain functions: verification will rely on data sampling and SNARKs instead of re-executing every block, consensus will move to a more efficient proof-of-stake system, and block building will become multi-party rather than miner-led. The result should bring faster finality, shorter slot times, lower node hardware requirements, and stronger censorship resistance through enforced transaction inclusion. Privacy will improve through zero-knowledge proofs, private account abstraction, and network-layer tools like onion routing and mixnets, though general-purpose private computation will still be limited. Buterin argues this “post-Lean Ethereum” is really a hybrid of blockchain and decades of cryptography, with parallel execution, parallel data storage, and stronger verification enabling capabilities traditional blockchains could not support.
