Zcash holders back 25-second blocks, vote to keep ZEC halving schedule
Zcash coinholders overwhelmingly approved key parameters for the next network upgrade, NU7. In the poll, 99.9% of ZEC-weighted votes supported reducing the target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, and 98.9% supported keeping the current halving schedule. The faster block time is meant to shorten the wait for first transaction confirmation, while the issuance per block would be reduced so daily ZEC issuance stays unchanged. Coinholders also favored excluding any features not implemented by Sept. 30. NU7’s activation date is still undecided, and final upgrade items are planned for delivery by that deadline. For the Network Sustainability Mechanism, about 97% voted to delay ZEC reissuance until February 2031 rather than starting it immediately. The mechanism is intended to recycle part of transaction fees into future block rewards to support long-term network security without exceeding the 21 million ZEC cap. Advisory-panel voting was more divided on the halving question.
