Crypto hackers have taken $2.7 billion in 2026 and the losses are alarmingly concentrated
Summary
CertiK recorded 658 crypto security incidents through September 2026, with gross losses of about $2.68 billion. After $420.4 million was frozen or returned, adjusted losses were roughly $2.26 billion. September was the costliest month, at $766.5 million, driven mainly by the $387.5 million Bitget breach and $318.7 million Liquid Network incident; the five largest attacks accounted for nearly 59% of year-to-date losses. Elliptic says suspected North Korean hackers stole more than $1 billion across over 51 incidents, including attacks it links to Bitget and Drift Protocol. CertiK also reported a rise in physical “wrench” attacks, with losses reaching $124.2 million in the first half of the year.
