Protesters March on OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind Demanding AI Development Pause
Protesters in San Francisco marched between OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind offices to demand a pause on training more powerful frontier AI models. The Stop the AI Race demonstration, organized by former AI researcher Michaël Trazzi, focused not only on AI safety but also on job losses, environmental costs, rising housing prices, and the influence of big tech firms. Organizers want companies to keep existing systems running while shifting research toward safety and alignment until stronger safeguards exist, with some also calling for stricter local and state regulation. The group says it is now pushing for broader political pressure and an international pause on frontier AI development. Support has grown since an earlier March protest, including endorsements from labor and Bay Area advocacy groups. The protest comes amid heightened concern over AI risks, including safety features added by OpenAI, U.S. restrictions on some Anthropic models, and a UN panel warning that catastrophic harm cannot be ruled out.
