Hong Kong jails former banker over $1.6B false credit, cryptocurrency bribes: Report
A former Hong Kong bank manager, Lam Chun-yin, 32, was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to falsely authenticating letters of credit worth more than $1.6 billion. As a customer relationship manager at China Construction Bank (Asia), he also received more than $470,000 in cryptocurrency bribes, which he must repay as restitution. The judge said deterrent penalties are needed even for first-time offenders because of the seriousness of the offense and its broader social harm. The court stressed that banking and insurance are central to Hong Kong’s economy, and the scheme damaged the city’s reputation as a global financial hub. Hong Kong’s anti-corruption agency, the ICAC, has also sought arrest warrants for other people linked to the case.
