New Cardano partnership promises to monetize your private data, but payouts likely start at just $1.25 a year
Cardano Foundation partnered with Reef Data eG, a cooperative that pools members’ personal data, sells licensed datasets to businesses, and pays royalties back to contributors. Cardano’s Reeve layer does not store the data; it records sales, timestamps payouts, and provides a tamper-evident audit trail for revenue distribution. Reef sits within a broader EU data-intermediary landscape shaped by the Data Governance Act, alongside models such as data cooperatives, trusts, unions, marketplaces, and sharing pools. Similar projects already exist, including MIDATA, Swash, DataVaults, and SalusCoop, but Reef is more explicitly commercial. Legal uncertainty remains over whether Reef is using rights already available under GDPR or new rights under the Data Act, and whether its on-device process truly anonymizes data or only pseudonymizes it. The key novelty is not the data itself but the auditable, on-chain proof of who got paid and how much. Whether that translates into meaningful income depends on buyer demand and member scale.
