Why Strategy Is Selling Bitcoin and How Much It Has Sold So Far
Strategy, the largest corporate Bitcoin holder, has shifted from a strict buy-and-hold stance to selling portions of its Bitcoin as financing conditions worsened. After years of saying it would never sell, executives now say the company may sell Bitcoin when that better serves shareholders, especially to fund dividends, interest payments, and preferred-share buybacks. The change came after Strategy’s preferred stock fell below $100, limiting its ability to raise capital through new share issuance. In late June, Strategy formalized this approach with a Digital Credit Capital Framework, allowing up to $1.25 billion in Bitcoin sales to rebuild cash reserves and support capital needs. Since May, it has sold 6,948 BTC for about $432.5 million, including recent sales used mainly for STRC buybacks and preferred dividends. Even so, Strategy still holds more than 840,000 BTC, worth about $53.6 billion, and remains heavily committed to Bitcoin as its main treasury asset.
